Wow this car brought me back – it just screams mid to late nineties to me. I refer to this era as the golden age of Japanese sports cars. Most of the big Japanese companies were doing a sports car everything from Acura’s NSX to the Nissan 300zx, Mitsubishi 3000gt and Toyota Supra were all being produced and each one of them had a loyal following.
This Supra is modded with period correct parts and looks like it could be in a late 90s Turbo or Super Street magazine. The Blitz Technospeed wheels are a nice touch and used to be one of the must have aftermarket wheels for the Supra (Work Equips & Manaray were also popular). This Anthracite version is also sporting the super popular TRD hood and wing.
The MKIV Supra (MKIV = Mark 4 or 4th generation) is undeniably the most popular Supra body style ever. It came stock with a twin turbo inline 6 that pushed 320hp. The engine is known to be bulletproof and many examples have pushed the boundaries to over 1000hp. The transmission was also beefy coming directly from a well known source – Getrag.
When the controversially styled Supra came out the tall rear wing was a source of contention. It was tall and large but did produce an effective amount of downforce at high speeds. The Supra wing would eventually play a part in the import enthusiast community with everything from Civics to Eclipses sporting the same styled aerodynamics.
Although this Supra is mildly modified I think the asking price of $36k is a fair starting point. It is getting extremely difficult to find clean unmodified examples of the Supra – especially with the twin turbo and the 6 speed manual. You can’t imagine how many ads I see for Supra’s that look like a good candidate for his blog but when I open it up I see an automatic – the only thing worse is finding an automatic NSX.
With the Lexus LFA and Nissan GT-R already out and other Japanese cars in the works such as the new Acura NSX and a rumored Mark V Supra I’m excited to see if Japanese sports cars will rise again.
